Your GARDENING CLUB needs you!!!

gardening club show

Akeley Gardening Club was restarted in 1993 after a few years in abeyance.

It is a light-hearted, village based club which runs a number of established events each year and adds others as and when there is sufficient interest. In the past these have included coach trips, car outings, wine making, wine tasting, horticultural talks, slide shows and others. We have maintained the annual membership fee at only £2 per person and this also gives discount at Preston Bissett and Barrs Nurseries.

However, the membership has fallen in recent years due partly to people moving away and without new blood the club may expire in the not too distant future. The activities have always been considered enjoyable, family friendly and anything but hard work. A typical year is as follows:

The main event of the year is “The Show” on the first Saturday of September.  Again it is an amateur, village event, more for fun than high competition.

We are also affiliated members of the RHS which allows us one free trip a year, for 55 members, to one of the RHS gardens. Wisley being the popular choice.

News for the Parishes (October 2014)

October 2014 Number 5/2014

Clerks – Please share the following information with your Parish Councillors Opportunities to work as a Poll Clerk at the General Election – Thursday 7 May 2015

AVDC is seeking to recruit additional staff interested in working as a Poll Clerk at the General Election, which will be held on Thursday 7 May 2015.  We already have a database of people who have assisted in the past, who we will contact later this year, but we will need to recruit additional staff to work in May 2015.

Working as a Poll Clerk involves working at a Polling Station, which are located at various locations and villages across the District, from 7am to 10pm on election day.  An on-line election training module can be completed prior to election day to assist first time staff.  All Polling Stations are also managed by an experienced Presiding Officer who will explain to new staff what is required when working on election day.  The fee paid to Poll Clerk is usually £122 + £20 for completing the election training.

If you are aware of local people who would be interested in working as a Poll Clerk could you please ask them to contact Craig Saunders at AVDC on or (01296) 585043.

Operation Arctic

Operation Arctic is a seasonal crime prevention campaign raising awareness about the increased risks of burglary as the evenings draw in.  The campaign starts on Monday 6 October and runs to the end of January.

Darker evenings afford the burglar greater cover to commit burglary offences and also a period where it is more obvious if you’re not at home.  Occupied houses have lights on, during the winter months lights are often required from 4pm and so a timer switch, which enables lamps to come on, can be an effective and low cost solution.  We recommend that timer switches on lamps are used in the house and that they are set to follow a pattern of someone living in the house, for example one comes on late afternoon in the lounge area, followed by one upstairs from around 6.30/7pm making it appear there is someone home.

For more advice on keeping your home safe this winter or for a timer switch visit
